What's covered
Welcome and agenda (00:00). Dave Insull (CRO) and Keegan introduce the session: a walkthrough of the platform with a focus on Public Transport.
What Extraordinary is (00:23). A New Zealand employee benefits platform used by 500+ organisations plus hundreds of small and medium businesses across NZ and Australia, now expanding to the US. Four modules run through three things: a digital Mastercard in Apple or Google Wallet, the employee app, and an admin portal for funding, reporting and utilisation.
Public Transport (02:17). Following a 2025 Inland Revenue ruling, employees can use pre-tax income to pay for their commute. Employers share the online calculator so staff see their saving (around 30%, roughly $600 to $970 a year on typical spend). Staff sign a declaration, payroll sets up a pre-tax deduction, and each pay run the funds load onto the card, locked to public transport. It works nationwide by tapping on or topping up AT HOP, Snapper, Metrocard or Bee Card. It is broadly cost-neutral for employers, because the KiwiSaver saving on the sacrificed amount offsets the monthly fee.
Gifting (08:27). Replace Prezzy, Bonfire or supermarket vouchers with a digital gift sent instantly and spendable anywhere. Unspent funds return to your funding balance instead of the voucher vendor, and you track spend and utilisation in the dashboard.
Controllable Allowances (12:39). Like gifting, but spend is locked to the merchant categories you choose, from 8,500 Mastercard codes, for example a health and wellbeing allowance. Set it one-off or recurring, and unspent funds stay with you.
Reward and Recognition (15:34). Managers or peers recognise each other from the app within a budget you set, linked to a company value, with a notification pushed to Slack, WhatsApp or your internal tool. Funds land on the recipient's card.
Going live and onboarding (17:01). Staff get a welcome email, download the app and provision their digital card in about two minutes. Extraordinary tracks and follows up anyone who hasn't onboarded.
Pricing (18:06). Modular. Gifting has no monthly fee, just a 5% load fee. Allowances and Reward and Recognition are $2 per employee per month plus a 5% load fee. Public Transport is $4.17 per enrolled employee per month. Digital cards are included, physical cards are a one-off $15, and optional Mastercard co-branding is a one-off $5,000.
Live Q&A (18:51). Divisions and tagging, what happens to PT funds when someone leaves, how Extraordinary makes money, mixing modules, who pays the fee, and whether there's an implementation fee (there isn't).
Common questions
How does the pre-tax public transport benefit work? Following a 2025 Inland Revenue ruling, employees use pre-tax income to pay for their commute, saving around 30%. Payroll sets up a recurring pre-tax deduction, and each pay run the funds load onto the Extraordinary card, locked to public transport.
Does the card work nationwide? Yes. Employees tap on anywhere the operator takes Mastercard contactless, or top up AT HOP, Snapper, Bee Card, Metrocard or Motu Move.
Does it work with our payroll? Widely compatible with no deep integration. iPayroll, Employment Hero, Datapay, PayHero and Smartly are straightforward; Xero Payroll and TechnologyOne need a slightly more manual setup.
