Questions? Answered.
No. When you submit the form, we send your employer a short, professional email about pre-tax public transport. Your name is not included. Anonymity is built into the Extraordinary referral flow.
Through salary sacrifice. Your employer reduces your gross pay by an agreed amount each pay run. That amount comes out before PAYE, ACC and KiwiSaver, then lands on your Extraordinary card. You use it to top up Snapper the way you already do. Pre-tax money means your commute effectively costs 30% less.
Around 30% on every Metlink trip. On an $80k salary sacrificing $50 a week, take-home drops about $31 and you get $50 of pre-tax transport. Net: $18.53 a week, or just over $900 a year. Upper Hutt to CBD saves around $1,289/year, Porirua around $893, Lower Hutt around $732.
Broadly cost-neutral. The platform fee is $50 per employee per year. Employer KiwiSaver savings on the sacrificed amount typically offset it. Break-even hits at $28/week. Above that, your employer is slightly ahead. No FBT cost: public transport is FBT-exempt under section CX 19C, confirmed by Inland Revenue ruling BR Prd 25/03.
A small amount. Both your KiwiSaver contribution and your employer's are calculated on the reduced gross salary, so both drop slightly. Tax and ACC savings outweigh the KiwiSaver reduction in most cases. Worth modelling if you're close to a KiwiSaver milestone.
Unpaid leave pauses the sacrifice until you return. Paid leave doesn't interrupt anything. If you leave your job, the sacrifice stops at your final pay run. Use any remaining card balance to top up Snapper before it deactivates.
